Not even ten minutes before my lunch hour ends at the Jimmy John's I'm eating at, I see some early 30ish black dude walk up to a couple of bikes parked outside of the store; I remembered a few kids rode on those bokes before coming inside. He looks over them, then casually hops on one and starts to roll away.
I loudly asked if anyone owned the purple child-sized bike because, uh, someone just hopped on it and rode off. Some little kid looked up from the cash register and said "A purple bike? Thats mine!" Then bolts out the store, and I run after him.
Upon seeing the guy ride away with said bike (which, looking back, seeing a roughly 6'2", 200+ man on a purple bike built for an 8-year-old looked kinda hilarious) I broke off into a run as the little boy shouted "Get the fuck off my bike, thief!" The lunch hour walkers outside all looked confused as I ran past them. The man looked over his shoulder then attempted to speed up faster.
I chased him a good two blocks, dodging through traffic, pushing people over and yelling at him (yeah, because it was so gonna help), while confused business folks said "Whats going on?", "a stolen bike?", "YOU GET 'EM!".
However, I was winded and losing speed. As a last resort, I frantically took off my shoe and launched it at his head. It hit the man, he swayed then started to fall; However, he steadied himself at the last moment then sped off and turned down the busy post-lunch-rush-hour street.
I still feel pretty shitty over it, especially when I turned around to see the kid standing a few feet away, tears in his eyes. I walked him back to JJ's and gave him some money to catch a bus home, as he was sobbing that he didn't know how he'll get home now.
I dunno. I just...am still at a loss for words. Why did people stand there with thumbs up their asses when they saw me chasing after some guy with the kid behind me screaming "He stole my bike!" Everyone just moved out of the way, looking confused.
Uuugh.
